CHICAGO, Illinois — The American Federation of Teachers is upset. They are upset because the United States Postal Service, in yet another novel idea to save money, has joined with Staples Stores, Inc. to sell postage stamps in all their stores.
Under any normal set of circumstances I would be inclined to agree with the moral outrage, as highlighted via the link above but and alas I am not, and I’m not mad for two reasons, stated here,
I have my great and good disagreements with labor unions but I appreciate them because when they are not busy paying the shop steward’s salary or the union boss’s way to that next White House meeting with the President they do, from time to time, truly represent and go to bat for workers.
Two things though to which I object from this posting.
One the intimation that it’s all the postal employee’s union is costing the post office all kinds of money. Not true. The Congress has elected not to fund the post office properly and the US Post Master General is in favor of that.
And two is postal management has been entirely inefficient with the money that they have to operate. One to many television commercials and longer lines at the local post office with only one window and often times only one employee working in the entire post office. I’ve seen it more than one time here in Paducah, KY. where I live. Its ridiculous.
So, and again, I have my disagreements with labor unions but in this case it’s not entirely this particular labor union(s) fault and I appreciate the AFT’s support of a fellow labor union.
Thank you my friend for sharing this posting with us. Be well.
I made that comment on this fellow blogger’s posting because I just didn’t agree. His shared summation was all wrong. Respectfully. It would be one thing if what was said about the postal union in the blog in the first place was true. More certainly if what was said about the American Federation of Teachers and their, as expressed in the posting, desire to ’employ more adults’ than educate kids then I’d say, “Yes, by all means complain about the complaint about the post office wishing Staples to sell stamps!” “Death to unions!” “Death to labor bosses!” Etc.
But I can’t help but harken aback to the fact that it is USPS management and the 113th Congress of the United States of America are keeping the USPS from coming out of its financial slump. And until the powers that be in Washington are made to change or be changed this November the quagmire will remain. Now that was Easy!
